The Calla 60w Amplifier

The Calla uses the Sovtek 6AS7 as an output tube. This tube is a low impedance triode. There are eight envelopes with 2 triodes in each. The amplifier is nominally 60w. per monoblock. It is one of the cleanest most transparent amps on the market. For the price we think it is the best thing out there. At any price it is one of the best. There may be nothing else out there at this kind of power that is this clear.

The amplifier uses exclusively toroidal transformers and chokes. The capacitors are all of high quality. The decoupling capacitors are all sidecapped. The front end capacitors are photoflash capacitors which are much faster than most giving tighter bass and better highs. All the wiring with the exception of the meter circuit is low oxygen silver coated copper with Teflon insulation. This is wire that many experts consider to be the best sounding. We have also used 18 and 14AWG wire which is much lower in resistance than what is usually found in an amplifier. The amplifiers are completely hand wired. The power supply has over 180 joules of capacitance and 7,500 microhenrys of inductance. There are many other details that make this amplifier special.

This amplifier can be run with nothing between the speakers and the tubes but a piece of wire. We have had a matching transformer designed and built for use with lower impedance speakers. This transformer is better than most output transformers, the difference between having it in the circuit or running direct is noticeable. We prefer direct in most cases, we are certain you will too. This means that you will prefer this amplifier to any other with an output transformer. You will find that there are no other amplifiers out there that have the power of this one and are OTL, in this price range. The amplifier also has the advantage of running tubes that are inexpensive and still in production. The front end tube the 6SN7 is one of the best sounding triodes on the market. The output tube is the 6AS7 currently being made by both Sovtek and Svetlana in Russia. The circuit is clean and simple.
